Iliotibial band syndrome (itbs) is a common overuse injury that causes pain on the outer side of the knee or thigh, often affecting runners, cyclists, and athletes involved in repetitive leg movements. It occurs when the iliotibial (it) band, a thick band of connective tissue running from the hip to the knee, becomes tight or irritated due to biomechanical imbalances, muscle weakness, or excessive friction against the knee joint.
Symptoms typically include a sharp or aching pain on the outside of the knee, which worsens with activity, especially when running downhill or after prolonged exercise. If left untreated, itbs can lead to persistent discomfort and a reduced ability to train or compete.
At The Foot Room, we assess and treat itbs through our biomechanical pathway, using advanced gait analysis to identify contributing factors. Treatment may include custom orthotics, strength and flexibility exercises, myofascial release techniques, footwear adjustments, and gait retraining to relieve strain on the it band and restore optimal movement. Our goal is to help you recover fully and prevent future flare-ups, so you can keep moving pain-free.
