In-toeing / Out-toeing

In-toeing (pigeon-toed walking) and Out-toeing (walking with feet turned outward) are common gait variations in children. These can be caused by natural rotational changes in the legs and feet during development, but in some cases, they may indicate underlying issues such as hip rotation, tibial torsion, or foot structure abnormalities.

Mild cases often resolve as a child grows, but more pronounced in-toeing or out-toeing can lead to tripping, clumsiness, difficulty running, muscle fatigue, and uneven shoe wear. In sports, these gait abnormalities can affect balance, coordination, and performance, increasing the risk of injury.

At The Foot Room, we assess in-toeing and out-toeing through our children’s biomechanical pathway, using advanced gait analysis to determine the cause and impact on movement. Treatment may include strengthening exercises, gait retraining, footwear advice, and custom orthotics, if needed, to support proper alignment and improve function. Our goal is to ensure your child can move confidently and without discomfort as they grow.
