Gait Abnormalities in children

Children’s walking patterns naturally change as they grow, and some variations in gait are part of normal development. However, in some cases, gait abnormalities may indicate an underlying issue that affects movement, balance, or coordination. Our podiatrists are highly trained to recognise when a child’s gait falls outside typical developmental milestones, assessing whether their movement patterns require intervention.

Gait abnormalities can impact a child’s confidence, coordination, and ability to participate in sports and physical activities. Issues such as in-toeing, out-toeing, toe-walking, or excessive pronation (rolling in of the feet) can lead to foot, ankle, knee, and hip pain, as well as difficulties with running, jumping, and overall mobility. These movement inefficiencies may increase the risk of repetitive strain injuries, muscle fatigue, or joint stress, affecting their long-term musculoskeletal health.

At The Foot Room, we assess gait abnormalities through our children’s biomechanical pathway, using advanced gait analysis to identify movement patterns and underlying causes. Treatment may include strengthening exercises, custom orthotics to improve alignment, gait retraining, footwear recommendations, and referrals for further assessments if needed. Our goal is to support your child’s natural development, helping them move with ease and confidence while preventing future issues.
