Osgood-Schlatter’s Disease (Knee Pain)

Not actually a disease

Although called a disease, Osgood-Schlatter is not a disease but a common growth-related condition.

Osgood-Schlatter disease is a common cause of knee pain in children and adolescents, especially those involved in sports that require running, jumping, and sudden changes in direction. It occurs when the growth plate at the top of the shinbone (tibia) becomes irritated due to repetitive stress from the quadriceps pulling on the patellar tendon. This condition typically affects children between the ages of 8 and 15 during periods of rapid growth.

Symptoms include pain, swelling, and tenderness just below the kneecap, which worsens with activity and improves with rest. In some cases, a bony lump may develop at the affected site. If left untreated, Osgood-Schlatter disease can cause ongoing discomfort and difficulty with movement, limiting participation in sports and daily activities.

At The Foot Room, we assess and treat Osgood-Schlatter disease through our children’s biomechanical pathway, using advanced gait analysis to identify movement patterns and foot mechanics that may be contributing to excess strain on the knee. Treatment may include activity modifications, stretching and strengthening exercises, custom orthotics if needed, and footwear advice to support proper alignment and reduce stress on the knee. Our goal is to help your child manage pain effectively while staying active.
