Not actually a disease
Despite its name, Sever’s disease is not a disease but a temporary growth-related condition.
Sever’s Disease is a common cause of heel pain in children and adolescents, particularly those who are active in sports. It occurs when the growth plate in the heel bone (calcaneus) becomes inflamed due to repetitive stress and pulling from the Achilles tendon. This typically affects children between the ages of 8 and 14, as their bones are still developing and are more vulnerable to irritation.
Symptoms include heel pain, tenderness, swelling, and stiffness, which often worsen with running, jumping, or high-impact activities. If left untreated, Sever’s disease can cause ongoing discomfort and limit participation in sports or daily activities.
At The Foot Room, we assess and treat Sever’s disease through our children’s biomechanical pathway, using advanced gait analysis to identify any underlying foot or movement issues contributing to the condition. treatment may include temporary orthotic support, stretching and strengthening exercises, activity modifications, and footwear recommendations to reduce strain on the heel and promote healing. Our goal is to keep your child active while managing pain and preventing further complications.
