How to Become a Podiatrist

1. School and College Preparation:

A-Levels or Equivalent: Subjects like biology, chemistry, and physical education provide a good foundation for podiatry. Check university entry requirements as some might require specific subjects.

Work Experience: Volunteering or shadowing a podiatrist (or other healthcare professionals) is highly valuable and can give you a real insight into the profession

2. University Education: Degree in Podiatry:

In the UK, you’ll need to complete a BSc (Hons) degree in Podiatry. Some universities that offer accredited podiatry degrees include:

  • University of Salford
  • University of Plymouth
  • Cardiff Metropolitan University
  • University of Huddersfield
  • Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh
  • University of Northampton

Placement Experience: During your studies, you’ll complete clinical placements, gaining hands-on experience treating patients under supervision.

3. Registration and Professional Development:

Once you’ve qualified, you must register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) to practice legally in the UK. Many podiatrists continue to develop their skills through courses, workshops, and conferences, with opportunities to specialise further or pursue a master’s degree.

Fun Facts About Feet

Your feet have 26 bones, 33 joints, and over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments!

Each foot has over 7,000 nerve endings, making them one of the most sensitive parts of the body.

By the age of 50, most people have walked approximately 75,000 miles about three times around the Earth!

Toenails grow slower than fingernails, at around 1.6 millimetres per month.

Our feet produce half a pint of sweat every day. (Yes, half a pint!)
